Spruce Up Your Mouth This Spring!

While the Texas winters can be short-lived, it’s a relief to be done with the chilly days and windy nights. Now that spring is fully underway and the flowers are blooming, it’s the perfect time to begin your spring cleaning and maintenance! While you’re cleaning out your garage and making sure your home is properly protected for the future seasons, it’s also worth thinking about your annual dental checkups and cleanings.

In a lot of ways, getting your checkup and cleaning done is like starting your next spring cleaning project! Plus, once it’s out of the way, you won’t have to worry about it for the next several months. Just make sure to practice daily oral care (and clean up your house as needed!)

Checkups:
What You Can’t See Can Harm You

If you have a closet filled with clothing you don’t wear or a garage filled with aging exercise machines, old boxes or unused lawncare equipment, it can contribute to a lot of unnecessary clutter. Chances are you haven’t paid any attention to this growing pile (or completely forgot about it) and now this stuff has only become a vehicle for dust, vermin and rodents. Furthermore, garage clutter can easily become a fire hazard if not managed on a regular basis.

As it turns out, you can say the same thing for plaque on your teeth and gums. Plaque is colorless and doesn’t really start to appear or cause problems until it gets really out of hand. That’s why regular maintenance makes such a big difference. By seeing Dr. Balington, he can confirm the current status of your oral health, prevent problems before they become permanent and provide helpful advice on managing your oral care in between visits.

Cleanings: When the Job is Too Much for One Person

Sometimes when you begin your spring cleaning, it can easily make you feel overwhelmed. In some cases, getting started may even feel impossible without help! When the job feels like too much, having a friend or family member present can make a huge difference. Not only is an extra set of hands always a good thing, but having a second pair of eyes helps you plan more effectively throughout your day.

Attending a dental cleaning is much like having that extra help. The only difference is, you’re getting the help of someone who is educated and completed years of training on the best and most effective methods to removing harmful plaque and tartar. It’s the dental cleaning-equivalent of having Marie Kondo from Tidying Up by your side! You need cleanings every six months, so why not have Dr. Balington and his team of hygienists protect your teeth and gums for years to come?

Prevent Emergencies
with Spring Cleaning!

As mentioned, leaving piles of clutter around the home can dramatically increase the risk of damage if a fire were to break out. According to data from the U.S. Fire Administration, 6,600 fires broke out annually from 2009 to 2011 in garages attached to single-family homes and other residential structures. The average garage fire resulted in $54,800 worth of damage. If you knew that cleaning your garage out could save you that much on potential fire damage costs and make your garage look nicer, why wouldn’t you get it done?

The same logic can be applied to regular checkups and cleanings. Preventive measures like these (along with at-home care of course) are the most effective solutions to avoiding costly emergency and restorative dental treatments. In fact, a study from Cigna titled Improved Health and Lower Medical Costs showed that every dollar spent on preventive care could save between $8 and $50 in restorative and emergency treatments.

This spring, don’t let your oral care go by the wayside. As you begin your spring cleaning, we hope that you take the time to call our office and schedule yourself and your family for a routine checkup and cleaning. After all, you only need to visit twice a year to ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy for many years to come. We hope to see you soon!
