December 2019 Newsletter New Year, New You!

With 2019 coming to a close, it’s time to start thinking about your new year resolutions! The new year is the perfect opportunity to consider which aspects about yourself you’d like to approve. This could be in terms of health or appearance, as both can make a big difference in your daily life.

At Denton Dental Center, we’ve noticed a pretty significant increase in the number appointments this time of year. We’re proud that so many patients are taking their oral health seriously, but we’re also happy that they’re considering cosmetic dentistry to improve the way their smile looks.

Of course, certain cosmetic treatments are proving to be more popular than others. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s State of the Industry Survey, about 9 in 10 dental practices surveyed offered veneers, direct bonding, or whitening to enhance their smile. This shows that practices want to help patients enhance their smile quickly and start their new year off right.

We hope you take a moment to consider the benefits that cosmetic dentistry can offer as you start your new year!

How a Beautiful Smile
Can Aid Your Mental Health

It’s no surprise that the better your oral health is, the better quality of life you’ll have. There’s less worry on how dental disease will affect your overall health and less time spent thinking about paying for restorative treatments. But what if having a more attractive smile also made a difference?

Based on a study from the National Institutes of Health, this may be the case. The study focused on two groups, one consisting of 17 people who were unhappy with their smile and planning on pursuing porcelain veneers to improve it, and a control group consisting of 27 people who were satisfied with their smile. After psychologically assessing the groups, researchers found that the unhappy group experienced a noticeable boost in self-esteem after a 6-month review period, while the other group showed no psychological changes.

It’s no surprise that higher self-esteem means you’re willing to see yourself in a better light, but the fact that a beautiful smile can help you accomplish that is very telling.

A Better Smile Can Make Establishing New Relationships Easier

For many, finding someone they can call their special someone is a major resolution in 2020. But did you know that first impressions can be dramatically improved when you have a friendly and attractive smile to show off? Based on the findings from a perception study conducted by Kelton Global, you’d be surprised by how many people notice a straight smile when meeting someone for the first time. Based on the study:

  • Nearly a third (29 percent) of respondents noted the smile is the first thing they notice about someone’s facial features.
  • Those with straight teeth were 57 percent more likely to get a date via a dating website based on photo alone.
  • Nearly two in five respondents (38 percent) would consider not going on a second date with someone with crooked or misaligned teeth.

Rely On Your Appearance for Your Job?
Consider Cosmetic Dentistry

If you rely on your appearance for your job, it just may be easier for you to fulfil more career-related resolutions if you have a smile you feel confident showing off. Of course, having a nice smile can be beneficial even if you work a typical office job as well. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry found that 74 percent of Americans believe that an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chances for career success. Furthermore, as mentioned in the Kelton Global study:

  • Americans often attach positive attributes to those with attractive smiles, including happiness (21 percent) and intelligence (38 percent)
  • Three out of four Americans noted that they would find an individual more trustworthy if they had an attractive smile, even more so compared to wearing a nice outfit or driving an expensive car.
  • Another 25 percent indicated that people with crooked teeth were viewed as less confident than people with otherwise perfect teeth.
