Why Do You Hide Your Smile?

As you age, you might find yourself hiding your smile from friends and family more and more. In some cases, having an imperfect smile may even make it more difficult for you professionally, particularly if you’re looking for a new job. That’s what appears to be the case based on data from a 2015 report completed by the American Dental Association’s Health Policy Institute.

Based on the report, it seems many patients have an issue with their smile’s appearance and condition. It notes:

  • 29 percent of low income adults and 28 percent of young adults believe the appearance of their mouth and teeth affects their ability to interview for a job.
  • 23 percent of adults feel embarrassment due to the condition of their mouth and teeth
  • 1 in 5 adults experience anxiety due to the condition of their mouth and teeth
  • 1 in 4 adults avoid smiling due to the condition of their mouth and teeth

When you boil down the numbers to Denton’s own population, that means thousands of people are potentially unhappy with the way their smile looks. Thankfully, patients at Denton Dental Center can work towards a smile that makes them feel confident regardless of the situation they find themselves in. The more attractive your smile looks, the more likely you are to show it off and reap its many benefits!

How
Can Teeth Whitening Improve Your Mental Health?

Did you know that smiling can provide benefits for your physiological and psychological health? Based on a 2012 study from the University of Kansas, those who smiled, even if the smile was forced, had lower heart rates and less stress while performing a difficult task compared to groups who did not.

So, why is this the case? It’s likely because smiling releases neuropeptides in the brain which work to fight off stress. Additionally, feel-good transmitters like dopamine, endorphins and serotonin all release when you smile. These chemicals have all shown to relax your body and lower your blood pressure and heart rate.

The Professional Benefits of Whiter Brighter Teeth

But smiling isn’t only beneficial for your own mental health. It can actually do a lot for those around you as well. Science says this has to do with our cingulate cortex, which is an unconscious automatic response area of our brain. When someone smiles at us, it triggers this area and causes us to unconsciously return the favor to that person. If you didn’t smile in response, it was likely because you made a conscious effort not to.

If you plan on attending an interview for a new job, it very well may be worth it to consider how an attractive smile can benefit your future career.

How Can
You Get Started Whitening?

One of the most accessible and most affordable forms of professional cosmetic dentistry out there is teeth whitening. Teeth whitening can be performed in our office or at home, depending on your preference. Those who whiten in the office can get maximum whitening results in just under an hour. In contrast, those at home can get the same level of whitening, but do so on their own schedule. Take-home whitening is ideal for those regularly on the go, but in-office whitening is perfect if you have a job interview or social event coming up soon.

These are considered to be the most significant differences between treatments. Regardless of the option you choose, you’ll still get:

  • Professional-grade bleaching solutions
  • The most effective application methods possible (i.e. dental dams or custom-whitening trays)
  • A quick, simple and affordable solution to imperfections in teeth
